I found it hard to relate to the character. As a mom, I cannot imagine leaving my baby for no reason without even letting my husband know. It was not as easy of a read and not as interesting as her other books. I was disappointed.
Paige, raised alone by her father after her mother left the family when Paige was just five, is making a new start for herself in Cambridge, working at a local diner. With Paige becoming pregnant, the stresses of new motherhood are also added to the situation. Nicholas, from a privileged life, is attending medical school when their paths happen to cross at the diner, changing both of their lives forever.The fall in love quickly and marry soon after. What neither had planned on was how their differing backgrounds would drive a wedge between them. Paige begins to wonder if she is destined to follow in her runaway mother's footsteps.This is an excellent novel of family relationships, and the struggles between parent and child, as well as between husband and wife. The reader explores along with the characters the wonders of creating new life, the struggle to maintain relationships as lives change, and the capacity for change within themselves.
It was such a touching story. The story was very good. I loved Paige and Nicholas. The story spans quite a bit of time, and I found myself forgetting that so many years had passed but that didn't really take away from the story. It only took me a few hours to read it. The character development was great. I loved this book. The changes didn't affect the flow of the story at all.
It was a quick read and it was easy to attach to the characters. Picoult did a great job with the narration changes, which I think can sometimes make a story seem choppy. If you like chick lit this is a good one to pick up. I had great images of them all, and I could even hear the accents in their voices as I read. I was so captivated by the characters that I just let myself get lost in the story. I really liked this one.
Even the secondary characters were great. I think Nicholas comes off as being a bit superficial and at times a real jerk but I almost understood where he was coming from and felt that he was justified in his actions (sometimes). It wasn't an excellent book, but it was pretty good. This was the first of Picoult's books that I've actually read, but I've added her to my list of favorite authors.
I was not sure who to feel sympathy for or who to be blame. This was a great book. I felt as if I was one of the characters. Jodi Picoult is a wonderful writer and catches the soul of her characters. BRAVO.Velma TownsOxford, AL
I received this novel in the time expected and am looking forward to reading it along with the other Jodi Picoult novels I have purchased. Her scenes and storylines are delicious. I am intrigued by Jodi's voice and the way she presents her characters. Every one of them becomes a friend or acquaintance. I savor every word and nuance long after I've read the book. To say I am a fan is putting it mildly.I'm so glad my sister introduced me to Jodi and I now recommend her work to everyone.I appreciate this opportunity to acknowledge my enthusiasm for this extremely talented author.Irene
